Greetings, gentlemen. For the past two weeks I’ve been wearing Le Beau, one of Jean Paul Gaultier’s more playful releases. It’s cheeky, youthful, and unmistakably JPG — and even though sweet fragrances aren’t usually my thing, I’ve found myself enjoying this one more than expected. I suppose this house gets a free pass… we go back a few years.

Le Male was my signature scent for years, and I’ve got plenty of good memories attached to it. I’m probably a bit too old for that style now, although I did recently review the latest formulation if you want to check that out here.

So what about this one?

Le Beau was released in 2019 and created by perfumer Quentin Bisch, a name you’ll often see attached to modern, sweet, crowd-pleasing fragrances.

It’s generally classified as a woody-aromatic fragrance for men, which feels about right. It absolutely carries that familiar Gaultier DNA — if you know the brand, you’ll feel right at home here. If not, this is still a very accessible introduction.

In this review, I’ll cover everything you need to know: price, scent profile, when and where to wear it, the compliment factor — and most importantly, whether it’s something that would actually work for you.

Let’s get into it.

Appearance & Presentation

If you’ve seen a Jean Paul Gaultier bottle before, you already know the deal: the iconic sculpted male torso. With Le Beau, things are… tastefully censored. Instead of the usual heroic bulge, the nether regions are covered by a strategically placed fig leaf.

It’s a bit saucy, and very JPG. Love it or hate it, the bottle is instantly recognisable and suits the personality of the scent perfectly.

Is it classy? Not really. It’s bold, a little over-the-top — but that’s the point. Gaultier has always leaned into theatrics, and this bottle fully commits to that identity.

Pricing

The price was a little lower than I expected — especially considering the Jean Paul Gaultier name and how fragrance prices have crept up in recent years.

So is it worth the dosh? I’d say yes. You’re getting good value here: solid performance, good scent quality, and it competes comfortably with other mainstream designers in this space like YSL Y EDP and Paco Rabanne Invictus. In that context, Le Beau doesn’t feel overpriced or out of place.

That said, don’t rush into a blind buy. This is a style of fragrance — sweet, creamy, and attention-grabbing — and it won’t be for everyone.

When it comes to getting the best deal, your best bet is almost always the discounters — especially when they’re running coupon codes. And the one that’s never let me down is FragranceX.

They ship worldwide, they only deal in authentic stock, and they’ve got a solid 30-day return policy, which keeps things risk-free.

Prices do move around (sometimes daily, especially during holiday sales), so it’s always worth checking the current deal. 👇

The Notes

According to Fragrantica, Le Beau keeps things simple but effective:

  • Top: Bergamot
  • Heart: Coconut
  • Base: Tonka Bean, Sandalwood

So, What Do We Actually Get?

From the very first spray, it’s coconut — and lots of it. Creamy, smooth, and front and centre. Contrary to what some reviewers claim, I do get a tropical freshness in the opening. There’s a touch of bergamot there too, but make no mistake — coconut is leading the charge.

It’s also something genuinely different for Gaultier, and certainly not something you’d find in the Le Male line.

As it develops, the sweetness comes in via the tonka bean — but thankfully not in that loud, bubble-gummy way you get from fragrances like Versace Eros or Paco Rabanne 1 Million. This is sweet, yes, but smoother and more controlled. There’s a warmth here that feels slightly more grown-up, while still keeping that fun-loving JPG edge.

This is where fragrances like this really shine. There’s something undeniably dirty-sweet about it — provocative, a little obnoxious, and oddly irresistible. It’s the kind of scent that fragrance snobs pretend to hate, yet secretly enjoy far more than they’d ever admit. Annoying? Yes. Effective? Also yes.

Is it masculine? Not especially. This isn’t a brooding, chest-thumping scent. It’s flamboyant, relaxed, and confident — and it easily leans unisex. I can absolutely imagine plenty of women pulling this off just as well as men.

If you’d prefer to sample it first, these are my two favourite
and most reliable places to get authentic decants:

Compliments

There’s no getting around it — this is a compliment-magnet. Le Beau is designed to get attention, and it does exactly that. It pulls in compliments, particularly from a younger crowd who respond well to sweet, creamy, easy-to-like fragrances.

It also gets a big thumbs-up at home — Mrs Webb is a fan, which, let’s be honest, is usually the only approval that really matters.

No complaints here.

When & Where Should You Wear It?

Le Beau is fairly versatile, but it isn’t a true all-rounder. I’d avoid it in peak summer heat — that creamy coconut and sweet tonka sit on a warm, slightly heavy base, and in hot weather it can feel a bit much.

In spring and autumn, though, it’s excellent. It also works very well in winter, especially indoors.

In terms of setting, this is a social, nightlife-leaning fragrance. Dates, nights out, bars, clubs, parties, events — anywhere there’s people, music, and energy, this feels completely at home.

What it isn’t is quiet or subtle. If you’re heading to the V&A in a tweed jacket, this probably isn’t the mood. This one wants noise, movement, and a bit of mischief.

Performance

Performance is very solid, especially in the opening. This one comes out swinging, so go easy — a couple of sprays is more than enough. It projects strongly and makes its presence known.

In the dry-down, it becomes more controlled but still noticeable, sitting nicely in that sweet spot where people around you can enjoy it without being overwhelmed.

Longevity is also strong. It lasts most of the day on my skin, and I’ll often catch a trace on my clothes the next morning — always a good sign for a designer fragrance.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, gentlemen — a strong, well-executed fragrance. Would I recommend it? Yes — with context.

Le Beau is made for the younger man about town, the guy who enjoys being noticed and isn’t afraid of something a little more forward.

If that sounds like you, this will probably suit you down to the ground. Like most JPG fragrances, it’s designed to be slightly audacious and to make an impression.

If you’re a bit older — like me — it may not be an obvious everyday choice, but it can still work depending on your taste and how you wear it. Fragrance is subjective, after all.

Let me know in the comments what you think of Le Beau. Love it? Hate it? I’m always curious to hear your take.
