Greetings, gentlemen. I trust you’ve had an excellent week. This week, I’ve been wearing Legend Spirit by Montblanc. As a long-time fan of the original Montblanc Legend, I had high expectations for this fragrance. Released in 2016 and created by renowned perfumer Olivier Cresp, Legend Spirit is classified as a woody aromatic scent for men. However, I would argue it leans more toward a citrus-based “freshie.”

Montblanc fragrances typically offer solid quality, though not without a few missteps. Take Explorer—an Aventus clone that has garnered some hype yet feels somewhat overblown. Then there’s Emblem, which showed promise but ultimately falls short in terms of performance. 

As for the Legend line, there are several variations, including Legend Blue, Red and Night. However, in my opinion, Legend Spirit stands out as the brightest and most casual of the lot.

Let’s take a closer look at this fragrance and see if it’s the right fit for your collection.

Appearance and Presentation 

The bottle’s design is nearly identical to the other fragrances in the lineup, with the main difference being its white colour. It’s also notably small and compact, making it quite portable.

For those who may not be aware, Montblanc originally made its name with fountain pens before expanding into fragrances and other luxury goods. To me, the bottle design seems to take inspiration from a fountain pen to some extent.

While it’s not the most distinctive or eye-catching bottle you’ll encounter, it’s clean, refined, and distinctly masculine. 

On a personal note, I do miss fountain pens. It’s unfortunate that they’ve largely fallen out of use in today’s digital age.

Pricing

This stuff is as cheap as it gets—cheap enough that you don’t need to analyse it like a work of art (because it really isn’t). If you’re after something you don’t have to think too hard about, then you won’t go far wrong with this.

My thoughts about the notes 

Alright, let’s dive into the scent journey. It kicks off with a bright, fresh, fruity burst—with grapefruit and bergamot taking the lead. 

As it settles, the fragrance introduces some woodiness and musk, with a subtle aquatic undertone that adds a bit of depth. But honestly, that’s pretty much the whole story. What you get at the start is more or less what you’re going to get throughout the day. Not much evolution here.

Now, let’s be honest: this fragrance gives off some serious air freshener energy. In fact, I currently have a car air freshener that smells very similar to this. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing; I kinda dig that car scent, but is it something I want to wear on my skin all day? Probably not. 

It smells pleasant enough, sure, but nothing that’s going to make you stand out in a crowd. And definitely not in the same league as the original, in my humble (but very accurate) opinion.

Compliments

By all accounts, this fragrance is a compliment magnet—it’s like a walking conversation starter, especially with the ladies. Why? Well, because it’s safe, inoffensive and familiar. It’s almost impossible not to like it.

My wife’s a fan, so you know it’s got some serious appeal because she has a very high standard when it comes to fragrances.

Personally, I didn’t think Montblanc Legend Spirit would be the one to receive so much love, but there we are. What do I know?

When and where?

This fragrance was made for simplicity and versatility—basically, it’s the scent equivalent of that one friend who’s always down for anything. You can wear it pretty much anywhere, anytime, without giving it a second thought. It’s the perfect “grab and go” fragrance to keep in your work bag for those moments when you need a quick refresh—no drama, no fuss.

It’s ideal for the office or the gym, and you’ll barely have to think about it. Sure, if you’re headed to a formal event or evening out, you might want something a little more interesting, but if it’s your only option, you’ll survive. Just don’t expect to steal the show because it probably won’t. It’s primarily a casual daytime scent. 

Performance

I do accept that fragrances of this type typically have a shorter lifespan on the skin, but this one takes the biscuit, I must say. It really doesn’t last long at all. In my experience, you’d be lucky to get an hour out of it.

This is an area that could use some improvement, I would suggest.

Other options

There are a few other options out there that do the same thing, but they do it better—and last longer, too. These are your fresh, easy-going all-rounders that you can wear anywhere without offending anyone. 

I’d recommend Lacoste White, Mr. Burberry Indigo, Coach for Men, and Armani Code. Oh, and don’t forget the original Legend—an old, trusty fragrance that’s done me and others many a good turn over the last few years. 

Should you buy?

Well, if you ask me, I’d have to say no. It just doesn’t quite measure up to other options out there. It’s not a bad fragrance—it smells decent enough—but there are better choices, as I’ve mentioned. I’d recommend giving one of those a try and seeing how it works for you.
