Greetings, gentlemen, and welcome to Soap of the Week. This week, I have been using the Bulldog Oil Control Bar Soap. The Bulldog Skincare brand was founded in London back in 2006 by a couple of pals named Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier. The idea was to create high-quality organic-type products specifically for men due to a lack of options at the time. Now, that wasn’t a bad idea, as most products of that sort are unisex, as we know.
If you walk into your local Holland and Barret or Whole Foods Market, you will undoubtedly find an array of organic products, but you’re unlikely to find anything exclusively aimed at men, which is a shame. It would seem Bulldog have found a gap in the market and done quite well for themselves here. Be that as it may, is the soap bar actually good and worth your hard-earned dosh? Well, my soap-loving friends, I’ve been testing it, and here are my findings.
Price and where to buy
You will find the Bulldog range in most stores and supermarkets worldwide, which includes skincare, shaving, beard, body care and haircare products. They pretty much do everything now, whereas the soap bar is rarely seen on the shelves (at least, I haven’t seen it). No surprise there, I guess.
Nevertheless, I had to turn to good old Amazon and buy it for a total of £4.00, which is relatively cheap, all things considered.
Presentation
The box is simple and to the point, nothing fancy or distinctive at all, although you can tell it’s a man’s product for sure. Here is an interesting quote from a Forbes interview with the founder regarding the design.
“From a branding perspective, we also very purposefully intended to stand out in a crowded market. Before Bulldog, the men’s skincare aisle was a sea of blacks, blues and greys. All these products were marketed with complicated skincare jargon. Our packaging is white and we use straightforward language in comparison to the over-the-top scientific jargon typically preferred by the older and more established brands in the skincare industry.”

Ingredients
Here are the photos, guys. All the ingredients are listed there.

Are the ingredients organic?
Well, it states on the box, “with natural ingredients,” while it doesn’t state that ALL ingredients are natural. The only way to determine this is by reviewing the ingredients individually, which I don’t intend to do in this article. It is, however, suitable for Vegans as it doesn’t contain any ingredients from animal sources, which is good to know.
What does it smell like?
According to the packaging, this soap comprises witch hazel, willow bark and juniper. To me, the scent is mild (very mild) and smells predominantly of pine, somewhat like tea tree oil, which I suspect is probably from the juniper. Pine is widely considered a woody masculine scent and one of my favourite notes in soap bars and fragrances. Similar to other scents like mint, it has a calming and relaxing effect that will have you feeling like a new man after your shower.
Want to try this fragrance on your skin?
If you’d prefer to sample it first, these are my two favourite
and most reliable places to get authentic decants:

Performance
It feels nice, lathers beautifully, and moisturises my skin without any tightness or dryness. My only issue with this soap is it is way too mild, and the scent fades within seconds of exiting the shower. This isn’t a problem for some people, but it is for me because I like the smell to linger around in the bathroom and on my skin for a while after I’ve used it.
Another thing I often do (and I appreciate it’s unusual) is randomly smell the soap bar whenever I find myself in the bathroom because, well, why not? Anyway, I could smell nothing on doing that with this one, which is odd for a scented product. The only time you can smell it is when it is in use.
The scent is fine, yet it’s simply just not strong enough for me. Other soap bars with similar scents and organic characteristics perform much better in this area. For example, check out my reviews of the Bare Bar Soap and Faith in Nature. Those are well worth a gander.
Conclusion
So there you have it; those are my thoughts on this soap bar. It’s okay, but nothing that unique and better options exist. Remember to leave a comment below and let me know your experiences.
