Greetings, gentlemen. It’s time for soap of the week, and this week, we’re going old school with the Tabac original “Luxury Soap” that I have been using for the last two weeks. I have always seen Tabac deodorants and shaving products in supermarkets and chemists, but I always wondered if they made regular soap bars. So a few weeks ago, I decided to check online, and lo and behold, there it was.

Tabac is a German brand that has been around for a while. It was founded by Mäurer & Wirtz in 1959, and they have released both eau de toilettes and colognes with the signature Tabac woody, spicy and floral scent. I will perhaps review some of them in the future, but is the soap good?

Here’s my humble opinion.

By the way, if you enjoy old-school soap bars, you should also check out my review on the Brut Soap on a Rope. It’s worth a read.

Price and where to buy

I have yet to see them in brick-and-mortar shops, so it would seem that the only place you can buy is online, at least in the UK. I ordered mine from Amazon whilst it was out of stock and had to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive. It cost me £6.00, an excellent price for what you’re getting here.

Presentation

Effort has been put into the presentation; the box is high quality, and the soap looks almost edible (seriously). It reminded me and my wife of a chocolate egg you want to open and see what’s inside. It is an odd shape for a soap bar, but different from the usual, and I like it. I also like how it has been moulded; it’s very pleasurable to hold in my hand, making me not want to put it down.

Ingredients

The photo of the box below will explain all.

Are the ingredients organic?

It’s not advertised as such, and by looking at the ingredients on the packaging, I will say no. That’s fine by me, although If you have allergies or sensitive skin, you may wish to give this more thought.

What does it smell like?

The scent is sweet, powdery and floral, similar to the Tabac aftershave to some extent. To sum it up, it smells like talcum powder, which I generally like. If you don’t like the scent of talcum powder, then steer clear of this product.

Now, you may think that doesn’t sound very manly, but if you consider some of the great fragrances of the 70s and 80s, many had a marginal talc vibe. Remember that this is a throwback to that era, so don’t expect anything contemporary.

Want to try this fragrance on your skin?

If you’d prefer to sample it first, these are my two favourite
and most reliable places to get authentic decants:

Performance?

The performance of this soap in the shower is fantastic, and it is enjoyable to use. It lathers up very well and feels smooth and creamy, leaving my skin moisturised with no nasty tightness or dryness.

My wife, who tends to stay away from most of the soaps I buy (and there are many of them), has surprisingly been using this as well. For her to do this, it has to be good, which says a lot. She even went as far as to describe it as “a beautiful treasure”. Honestly, out of all the soaps I’ve sampled, I never thought this would be the one to receive such a comment, but there you go.

Conclusion

So there you have it. I recommend this little gem to anyone looking for something traditional with nostalgia for the “good old days”.

If not for yourself, it could be an excellent gift for your dad or grandad, who probably would have used some of the products back in the day. If that was you, let me know your experiences in the comments below.
