Today I am reviewing Dr Bronner’s All-One Peppermint Pure-Castile Bar Soap. As well as being quite a mouthful, the soap is an old-timer, launched way back in 1858 by the Bronner family. Anyone reading my blog will know that I love an old product with a history, and this is no exception.

Furthermore, this week I was looking for a soap that may suit a guy who likes to spend a lot of time in the wilderness camping, hiking or other such manly activities. While researching this, I noticed that this soap was mentioned quite a few times, so let’s take a look to see why that is and what else it has to offer a man that might be looking to purchase a new bar of soap.

Where to buy

As far as I can tell, the company is now based in the US, and its products are available worldwide. If you are in the UK, you will probably find this soap in your local Holland & Barrett or other hippy type-shops in the health and wellbeing market. I bought mine from Amazon for £5.00, which is, in my opinion, moderately priced and reasonable for what it is.

Appearance & Usage

The presentation is simple, wrapped in paper and has a medicinal look, something that wouldn’t look out of place in a pharmacy. The soap bar is also simple, with the words “All-ONE” engraved on the top, but what exactly does this mean?

Well, in addition to cleaning yourself, this soap bar can be (according to the website) used for shaving, brushing your teeth, rinsing fruit, aromatherapy, washing dishes by hand, doing laundry, mopping floors, all-purpose cleaning, washing windows, scrubbing toilets, washing dogs, controlling dust mites, ants and aphids.

So let’s talk about how this is made, one of their main selling points. For those who do not know, castile soap is vegetable-based and made free of animal fats or other synthetic ingredients. In other words, it is 100% natural and entirely biodegradable.

This makes it ideal for outdoor use because, unlike many soaps, it’s easy on the environment, although it should still be kept away from lakes and rivers. I also hear it’s perfect for sensitive skin; my wife uses the non-scented version of this, which, although very dull, does somewhat help with her eczema.

The scent

That’s all excellent stuff Gary, but what does it smell like? As you would expect for a peppermint-scented product, it’s fresh, sharp and smells a bit like candy. The smell of peppermint has an undeniable air of masculinity, and it is a good, safe scent for any man. Not only does it smell manly, but it also makes you feel like a million dollars after your shower. In my experience, no other ingredient does this better than peppermint. It has a calming effect on most people and will leave you with that clean, tingling sensation, ready to take on the world.

I should add that the scent is moderate and doesn’t linger much on your skin or in the bathroom, which is a bit of a shame for me as I happen to like this effect. If you want a natural-smelling soap that DOES have this effect, I recommend Horace’s Virginia Cedar & Sage Leaf Soap Bar, and you can check out my review of that here.

QUICK NOTE:

If you’re thinking about buying this fragrance, sampling it first is always a smart move. The way a scent performs on your skin over several hours — especially the drydown — can be very different from a first spray or paper test.

A few proper wearings will tell you far more than any review ever could.

Quality

The soap is average in size, and I estimate it will last around 3-4 weeks with daily usage, which is OK. It lathers up better than many other soaps and does an excellent job of cleaning you, which is its primary function after all. There is something refreshingly simple about it, and I find the multipurpose element appealing. Perhaps I’ll use it tonight to wash the dishes and let you know how I get on, as it’s my turn, unfortunately.

This isn’t a product I would usually gravitate towards, as it’s too mild for my liking. Having said that, I would still say it is generally good value for money, and I would repurchase it. Why? Because it is a handy piece of kit that is enjoyable and can also be used in many different situations. Imagine waking up in the morning to find out that you’ve run out of toothpaste, and having this as a temporary solution.

Anyway, I’ve covered everything I want to say for now. Let me know what you think if you’ve tried this or any other of their product range.

I hope this review has been helpful to you, and stay tuned for more of my thoughts on the best and worst men’s products of all time (more of the best than the worst).
