Greetings, gentlemen.
This week, I’ve been wearing Tom Ford Noir, arguably one of my favourites from the house. I have to say, it’s been a real pleasure. Released in 2012 and created by Olivier Gillotin, Noir was originally classed as a “woody oriental.” That description feels a touch misleading. While there’s spice, warmth, and a smoky undercurrent, it’s not your typical heavy resinous oriental. Instead, Noir is smoother, fresher, and more refined than you might expect.
Since its launch, Noir has spawned several flankers such as Noir Extreme, Noir de Noir, Noir Anthracite, Noir Eau de Toilette, and Noir Extreme Parfum, each putting a different spin on the DNA. But for this review, we’re talking about the original.
So, is it still worth your hard-earned cash in 2025/2026?
In this review, I’ll break down the scent profile, performance, versatility, compliment factor, and whether Noir has stood the test of time over a decade since its release.
Appearance & Presentation
The bottle? I’ll be honest—it’s not my favourite. It’s modern, sleek, and very Tom Ford, but it doesn’t quite match the character of the fragrance itself. The ribbed black flacon gives off a flashy, high-fashion vibe, whereas the scent leans more mysterious, refined, and quietly confident.
Still, it’s elegant enough. The rectangular, glossy black bottle with vertical ribbed detailing has a tuxedo-like aesthetic. High-end and sharp? Absolutely. Timeless and classic? Not so much. Next to something like Polo Green or Clive Christian 1872, it feels a little too “night out in the city” and not quite “gentleman’s study.”
Pricing
Noir isn’t as pricey as Tom Ford’s Private Blend collection, but it still sits above the average designer. It’ll make your wallet wince slightly.
Is it worth it? I’d argue yes—especially if you appreciate dark, refined, mysterious scents. That said, alternatives exist. Creed Bois du Portugal offers a similarly polished style with even smoother execution. Of course, Creed also means remortgaging your house so Noir might feel like the sweet spot and more accessible for some.
The Note Breakdown
According to Fragrantica, Tom Ford Noir features:
- Top notes: Violet, Pink Pepper, Caraway, Bergamot, Verbena
- Heart notes: Rose, Geranium, Nutmeg, Iris, Clary Sage
- Base notes: Amber, Vanilla, Patchouli, Vetiver, Opoponax, Civet, Leather, Benzoin, Styrax

Thoughts on the Scent
Opening: A soft, powdery hit of violet leads the way. Smooth, slightly floral, and surprisingly addictive. Tom Ford fragrances can be divisive, but this one had me hooked from the first spray.
Heart: Rose and geranium join in, enriched with nutmeg and clary sage. It’s floral and spicy, but never feminine. It settles with a smoothness that’s closer to a candlelit study than a garden party.
Base: As it settles, you’re left with warm amber and vanilla, grounded by patchouli and vetiver. There’s a subtle leathery undertone, almost like a vintage jacket tucked away in an oak wardrobe. Understated, masculine, and quietly daring.
Overall, Noir feels sophisticated and distinctive—a gentleman’s scent that avoids the generic designer trap of ambroxan overload or syrupy sweetness.
Compliment Factor
Noir isn’t a loud crowd-pleaser. Don’t expect “you smell amazing!” shouted across the street. Instead, this earns subtle nods and the kind of compliments you actually want—those from people with a bit of taste.
It’s the fragrance of a man who wears scent for himself. He’s not seeking validation. He already knows who he is, and Noir reflects that.

When & Where?
Although classed as an oriental, Noir isn’t strictly winter-only. I’ve worn it during the (modest) UK summer without issue. Just don’t over-spray in 30°C heat and you’ll be fine.
It leans formal—ideal for evenings, date nights, or whenever you want to sharpen your presence. Still, you could wear it casually if your style leans smart rather than sporty. If you own a sports jacket (and know it’s not part of a tracksuit), you can pull this off.
Performance
Performance is solid but not beastly. Expect around two hours of projection at arm’s length, and 4–5 hours of longevity before it sits closer to the skin.
And honestly, that’s perfect for this kind of fragrance. Too strong and it could feel cloying. Noir is meant to be discovered—not announced.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Sophisticated, masculine, mysterious profile
- Smooth blend of florals, spice, and woods
- Subtle allure that draws people in
- Works across seasons and settings
- Stands apart from most modern designers
Cons
- Moderate performance may underwhelm some
- Not a mass-appeal scent (leans mature)
- Priced higher than most designer releases
Should You Buy It?
I’d recommend Tom Ford Noir if you’re in your 30s or 40s and want something refined, confident, and a little mysterious. Younger guys can absolutely wear it too—it’s more about attitude than age.
If you prefer fragrances that are smooth, dark, and understated, Noir deserves a place in your collection. But if you’re looking for a loud, extroverted compliment magnet, this isn’t it.
Personally? I loved wearing it and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up a full bottle.
Have you tried it? If so, please drop your thoughts in the comments. I’d love to hear how Noir wears on you.
