Greetings, gentlemen.
This week I’ve been wearing Tom Ford’s Oud Wood Eau de Parfum — a fragrance that’s still riding high on countless “top 10” lists for men. And for good reason. (We’ll get to that.)
Now, I’ll level with you — I’m not usually an oud guy. It tends to lean too sweet, too syrupy, and frankly, a bit overhyped for my taste. But this blog isn’t about me — it’s about helping you make smarter fragrance choices. So here we go.
Tom Ford first released Oud Wood in 2007 as part of his Private Blend Collection — the same line that brought us Tobacco Vanille and Noir de Noir. There’s now a Parfum version too, which is more concentrated and supposedly longer-lasting. If you’re unclear on the difference between Eau de Parfum and Parfum, I break that down in my fragrance guide.
The scent is labeled unisex, but to my nose? It leans masculine — classic, smoky, quietly confident. Let’s get into the details.
Appearance & Presentation
If you’ve ever browsed a Tom Ford counter, you’ve seen the display: polished black and brown bottles, guarded like fine jewellery. Sleek, minimalist, and — let’s be honest — small. The design is clean, but it’s clearly playing the “luxury scarcity” game. Compact size, high price, prestige packaging.
It looks sharp. But it’s not exactly groundbreaking.
Pricing
And that price? Yeah… steep. I don’t mind paying a premium for something truly special (Bois du Portugal? Absolutely). But this? It smells great, no question — but not £200+ great.
People will still buy it, though. Stick the Tom Ford logo on a bottle of rainwater and someone will call it “nuanced.”
So here’s my take: only buy it if you genuinely love the scent. Not because of hype. Not because you think it’ll change your life. If it doesn’t blow you away from the first spray, keep your money.
Check Amazon below for the current price. I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

The Scent
Oud Wood is what we call a linear scent, meaning what you smell at the start is what you’ll smell a few hours later. No crazy mid-note journey, no surprise base. Just a smooth, steady ride from start to finish.
That said, it does smell great.
You get creamy woods right off the bat — sandalwood, rosewood, maybe a touch of cardamom and pepper. It’s warm and inviting, with just enough spice and sweetness to round it out. There’s even a soft vanilla thread in there, giving the whole thing a slightly luxurious, dessert-like undertone without ever turning gourmand.
And most importantly? It’s smooth. No sharpness, no alcohol blast, no synthetic weirdness. Just polished elegance.
If you’ve never worn oud before and you’re unsure where to start, this is a very safe gateway.
🔥NEW FRAGRANCE!

OLD SCHOOL — Eau de Toilette
Classic masculinity. Zero nonsense.
A clean, barbershop-inspired fragrance from the days when men walked out of the bathroom smelling like aftershave — not “Ocean Breeze Watermelon Mist.”
Built to showcase Vetiver at its best, Old School opens with bright blended citrus, moves into subtle spice, and settles into a warm mix of woods and earthy confidence.
A sharp, masculine, timeless scent that never goes out of style.
Price: £45
Performance
Here’s where it stumbles.
Projection is decent for the first hour — maybe arm’s length if you’re lucky — and then it starts to fade. On me, it was mostly a skin scent after about two hours. For something at this price point, that’s a letdown.
Of course, skin chemistry plays a significant role. It might last longer on you. But for me? The longevity just didn’t justify the price.
If you’ve tried this one, I’d love to hear your take. Does it stick around on your skin, or does it fade into the background like it did for me?
Compliments
When it is projecting, expect compliments.
It’s that kind of scent — smooth, confident, and hard not to like. Even for someone who usually avoids oud, I found myself sniffing my wrist more than once. It walks that fine line between rich and wearable.
If the performance were better, it’d be a compliment magnet all day long. As it stands, you’ll get attention… but not for long.

When & Where to Wear It
Oud Wood is a cold-weather killer.
This thing was built for autumn and winter — crisp air, low lighting, formal settings. Think cashmere coats, dimly lit dinners, tuxedos. Wear it in the heat and it’ll feel suffocating and overdone.
It’s also not an everyday scent. Unless your daily routine includes private clubs and velvet ropes, this should be reserved for your best occasions: weddings, big nights out, high-stakes meetings.
It’s luxury — and it wears like it.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Beautifully blended, creamy wood scent
- Smooth and inoffensive — a great intro to oud
- High-quality feel from first spray
- Perfect for formal occasions or cold weather
Cons
- Disappointing performance for the price
- Very expensive compared to what it delivers
- Linear — doesn’t evolve much after application
- Bottle feels small for the cost (and it is)
Final Thoughts
So… do I like it? Yes. A lot more than I expected. Would I recommend it? Maybe.
If you’ve smelled it and it instantly hits that “signature scent” nerve — go for it. But if you’re just curious and thinking about blind-buying it based on hype, I’d say hold off. Get a decant first. Wear it a few times. See how it performs on your skin.
Because at the end of the day, a fragrance like this should wow you in every department — scent, performance, packaging, the works. And this one? It nails the scent… but the rest is a bit of a mixed bag.
Next up, I’ll be testing Tom Ford’s Fing Fabulous. Let’s see if it lives up to the name — because it’s also Fing expensive.
Until next time, gents — stay sharp, smell sharp.
