Greetings, gentlemen. Following last week’s review of Azzaro’s The Most Wanted Parfum, this week I’ve chosen another fragrance from the spicy oriental family: Bad Boy by Carolina Herrera. In fact, Bad Boy and its many flankers (and there are quite a few) are arguably the most popular line from the house. However, for now, let’s just focus on the original.
Besides, fragrances with numerous flankers can often be intimidating, especially when their differences aren’t immediately clear.
Released in 2019, Bad Boy was created by perfumers Quentin Bisch and Louise Turner, neither of whom I was previously familiar with. Since its launch, this fragrance has generated significant buzz and quickly gained a loyal following. It frequently ranks among the top 10 men’s fragrances on platforms like Google and Amazon. In this review, we’ll explore what makes Bad Boy so popular and if it lives up to the hype—or if there’s little substance behind all the praise.
Appearances & Presentation
I’ll give the bottle credit—it’s unique and innovative. But I’m not exactly ready to call it my best friend. It’s missing that “bad boy” charm, and honestly, it comes across as a bit over the top and tacky. Then again, that could have been intentional.
I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to resemble a lightning bolt, but to me, it looks more like one of those absurdly oversized trophies celebrities flaunt after winning some “Most Glamorous at the Gala” award. I don’t even know where that thought came from, but it’s what popped into my head. I’m sure some people like it, but it’s just not my cup of tea. I tend to lean more toward classic, old-school designs—less “bling” and more “vintage charm.”

Pricing
Get ready to dig deep with this one because it’s not exactly budget-friendly. Classified as a premium fragrance, it’s an Eau de Toilette (EDT), which surprised me—I honestly expected it to be an Eau de Parfum (EDP). If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, don’t worry—I’ve included a simple guide to help you understand in my free cheat sheet further down in the article.
When it comes to getting the best deal, your best bet is almost always the discounters — especially when they’re running coupon codes. And the one that’s never let me down is FragranceX.
They ship worldwide, they only deal in authentic stock, and they’ve got a solid 30-day return policy, which keeps things risk-free.
Prices do move around (sometimes daily, especially during holiday sales), so it’s always worth checking the current deal. 👇

The Notes

Middle Notes – Cedarwood, Clary Sage
Base Notes – Tonka bean, Cacao
Thoughts on the Notes
So, what’s going on with this fragrance? The opening hits you with a citrusy, fresh vibe, but it doesn’t take long before it settles into a predominantly sweet, woody profile. It shares familiar elements with fragrances like 1 Million, Eros, Invictus, and others. However, the inclusion of chocolate adds a unique, powdery touch, enhanced by the tonka bean. The overall experience is quite pleasant, with a slight aromatic quality in the mix.
That said, it feels a bit generic and lacks originality. There’s also a subtle, almost makeup-like, lipstick component to it that I’m not really a fan of. It’s not a fragrance I’d personally gravitate towards, but it’s still pretty good, all things considered.
Given the name “Bad Boy,” I was expecting something with a darker, leather-heavy kind of thing, but that’s not exactly what this fragrance delivers. I think it’s because I’ve always associated the “bad boy” image with someone in a leather jacket, sunglasses, and riding a motorcycle (yes, I know, it’s a bit cliché).

Performance
The performance isn’t going to break any records, but it’s not slacking, either.
For me, it lasted around 4-5 hours, which is pretty solid for an EDT—just enough time to get you through your evening without needing a touch-up. It projects for about 2 hours, so if you’re within arm’s length, you’ll get a whiff, but don’t expect it to announce your arrival from across the room. Nobody wants that anyway.
When & where
It isn’t exactly the “throw on for a casual day at the office” type. It’s more of a “suit up for a formal event or hit the town for a night out” kind of scent. Think less “morning meeting” and more “night out with style.”
Also, warm weather? Definitely not its vibe. It’s practically begging for those cosy winter nights by the fire.

and most reliable places to get authentic decants:

Compliments
This fragrance is basically designed to stop people in their tracks and make them say, “Wow, what’s that?” It’s the kind of scent that gets noticed—no surprise there, that’s what it’s made for.
Sure, it’s a little unoriginal and falls into the “generic” category, but let’s be honest: everyone loves it. Fragrances like this are practically compliment magnets. It’s a bit predictable, but hey, that’s just how it is.
Should you buy?
It’s decent for what it is, but nothing to write home about, in my opinion. It’ll work if you’re after a reliable, crowd-pleasing option, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking or unique.
As I mentioned earlier, its versatility is limited, as it’s really only suitable for colder months. Personally, I wouldn’t go for it—it’s a bit too generic for my taste—but you might find it works perfectly for you. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
If you want a fragrance similar to Bad Boy, I recommend checking out some of my other reviews on The Most Wanted Parfum, Bvlgari Man in Black, or Hugo Boss’s The Scent Absolute. All of which I thoroughly enjoyed.
