Gentlemen, I have been testing Ralph Lauren’s Polo Sport for the last two weeks. If you’re a regular blog follower, you’ve probably already guessed that this fragrance is right up my street. It’s old school, masculine, and has a bit of a ‘dad vibe’ about it, which I mean in the best way possible.
Polo Sport is an aromatic green fragrance released in 1994. It was the tail end of the masculine powerhouse era when a man’s cologne was still strong enough to interfere with your radio reception. That is, of course, when we still used to listen to the radio instead of podcasts on YouTube or Spotify. Oh, those were the days, weren’t they?
Anyway…
Let’s address the burning question on your mind: Is Polo Sport still a good shout for today’s modern man? (Whatever he is supposed to be). Well, my friends, here’s what I’ve found.
Pricing
It’s attractively priced, in line with other fragrances in the Polo series. This affordability, combined with its appealing scent, makes it a savvy choice for many men who appreciate a good deal.
In a world where quality often comes with a hefty price tag, Polo Sport stands out as a smart investment. However, it seems to have been overshadowed by some of the newer releases, making it a bit harder to find in your local fragrance store. But if you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll be rewarded with a gem.
You may see it somewhere in the “oldies” section next to the Aramis and Brut Aftershave, which is my favourite section, by the way.
When it comes to getting the best deal, your best bet is almost always the discounters — especially when they’re running coupon codes. And the one that’s never let me down is FragranceX.
They ship worldwide, they only deal in authentic stock, and they’ve got a solid 30-day return policy, which keeps things risk-free.
Prices do move around (sometimes daily, especially during holiday sales), so it’s always worth checking the current deal. 👇

Appearance and presentation
The bottle is pretty basic and, I guess, could be considered sporty to some degree.
Its appearance, reminiscent of the 1990s, is a nod to an era many of us hold dear. If you’re the nostalgic type, you’re likely to love this fragrance for the memories it evokes.
The note breakdown
Top Notes – Aldehydes, Mint, Lavender, Bergamot, Mandarin Orange, Lemon, Artemisia, Neroli
Middle Notes – Seagrass, Ginger, Geranium, Jasmine, Cyclamen, Brazilian Rosewood, Rose
Base Notes – Musk, Sandalwood, Cedar, Guaiac Wood, Amber
My thoughts on the notes
One thing you’ll typically see in an older fragrance is a lot of notes in the composition, and as you’ve probably noticed, Polo Sport is no exception to the rule. I appreciate these scents because they are more complex and interesting than most modern releases, which adds a layer of intrigue to the fragrance.
You can expect a fruity, fresh, citrusy opening followed by a green and herbal mid. Those woods in the base start to surface as the scent progresses, bringing it together to produce that retro smell we all know and love. The greenness is reminiscent of similar fragrances of its time that were considered manly and sexy.
Polo Safari has a similar scent profile, although it’s more dressy and formal. It’s another gem worth checking out if you’re like me and a fan of these old-school fragrances.
I wouldn’t necessarily describe the scent of Polo Sport as “sporty”, but that’s Okay. Much like the design, this stuff smells like the 90s and is deliciously nostalgic to my nose. It’s like a time machine in a bottle, transporting you back to when your Dad would rock his Sunday best and treat the family to a pub lunch. It’s a scent not just on your skin but in your memories, at least for some of us.

Performance
The performance isn’t great; I’ll be frank about that. There has been a lot of talk about reformulations with this one in the fragrance community, which I can’t comment on because I need a vintage bottle to compare it to. That said, my hunch is that it probably has been reformulated. I just can’t imagine it being this weak when it was first released 30 years ago.
It’s not weak enough to the point where I would rule out a purchase. You will still get around 3 hours of overall longevity and a moderate projection of about 1 hour. Most people within approximately an arm’s length can pick up on it. Not bad, but not great.

Compliments
In my view, this is a fragrance you would wear for yourself. You’re unlikely to garner much attention from it, as many people will dismiss it as a little dated. Those people are annoying, right?
Where and when to wear?
This is an all-season fragrance, so it is unnecessary to overthink it too much. It would be particularly well suited for casual day wear in the office, gym or chilling around the house. It’s not a formal fragrance; better options exist for that setting.
What about Polo Sport Fresh?
This flanker of the original retains the same DNA, although it is nowhere near as complex. Overall, it’s still pretty good.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Versatile and excellent all-round casual scent
- It can be worn any season
- Nostalgic 90s scent
- Interesting and complex mix of notes
- Reasonable price
Cons
- Performance not great
- It could be considered dated by some
Should you buy?
So there you have it, gentlemen, a classic I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. If you’re a mature man looking for something timeless and versatile, this could be just what you’re looking for.
Of course, it won’t be for everyone, especially if you are young and into modernistic scents. However, if you still appreciate an old throwback occasionally, why not give it a go? Let me know your experiences in the comments below.

I really liked your review, I used to live in El Salvador and my dad was using the polo sport, he visited us cause he was living in the US an come visit every year, he left the polo sport to me, that was back in 2000. You’re not going to believe me, I still have some left, I used it today, man I sprayed it on me at 5:30 am, right now it’s 7:25 pm and I still smell a lot, that made me look for the perfume and found this review, now I see is not the same like the old one. Regards
I wore polo sport starting back in 1993 for a few years. The sent would last all day. I recently purchased it and it never lasted but 2-3 hours, very disappointing. I checked out Ralph Lauren’s website and could not find it. Knock off?
As a GenX dad, I feel your review 100%. I was hoping to be transported back to simpler times, the early 90s, but accidently bought Polo Sport Fresh. Such is life. It’ll be like a 90s redux. Great review!
