Greetings, gentlemen. This week, I’ve been wearing Invictus by Paco Rabanne, a fragrance that initially didn’t pique my interest. However, I decided to give it a try and share my thoughts with you nonetheless. The reviews I read before trying it weren’t exactly glowing, and I was half-expecting a generic mall scent. We’ll get to that shortly.
Officially, it’s a woody, aquatic fragrance for men. It was released in 2013, a year that marked a shift in the fragrance industry towards more fresh and aquatic scents. The fragrance was composed by Veronique Nyberg, Anne Flipo, Olivier Polge, and Dominique Ropion, all of whom are renowned perfumers with some decent releases under their belts.
Now, the big question is, is Invictus a fragrance that lives up to its hype? In this article, I’ll delve into its nuances, evaluate its performance, and help you make an informed decision.
Appearance and Presentation
The bottle design is unique, resembling a trophy cup, which aligns with the fragrance’s name, ‘Invictus.’ it doesn’t immediately strike me as your typical fragrance bottle and could easily be mistaken for some kind of ornament.
It’s original, I’ll give it that.
Price and where to buy
This fragrance isn’t what I would call “budget-friendly” by any means, but I would say that it’s still pretty reasonable for what it has to offer, all things considered. That said, It leans towards the top end of what I would be willing to pay for a fragrance like this, which usually isn’t much.
It’s undeniably popular, which is reflected in its price. You can typically find it easily at most of the usual places.
When it comes to getting the best deal, your best bet is almost always the discounters — especially when they’re running coupon codes. And the one that’s never let me down is FragranceX.
They ship worldwide, they only deal in authentic stock, and they’ve got a solid 30-day return policy, which keeps things risk-free.
Prices do move around (sometimes daily, especially during holiday sales), so it’s always worth checking the current deal. 👇

Thoughts about the scent
Invictus is a fragrance that’s likely to ring a bell. It’s a sweet, fruity, watery scent with top notes of grapefruit, marine accord, and mandarin orange, a heart of bay leaf and jasmine, and a base of guaiac wood, oakmoss, patchouli, and ambergris. This scent might remind you of other popular scents in the same genre, such as Jean-Paul Gaultier’s ‘Ultra Male,’ although Ultra Male has a much better blend and performance, in my opinion.
One aspect to consider with fragrances like Invictus, which contain a significant amount of ambergris (much to its detriment), is the potential for a generic-smelling synthetic mess. This is a common issue with many mass-market fragrances. What I mean by this is that the scent can sometimes come across as artificial or overly synthetic, lacking the complexity and depth of more high-end fragrances.
While Invictus manages to avoid being as overpowering as some of its counterparts, such as 1 Million, it can still become noticeable and somewhat bothersome as the day goes on—at least for me. This is something to keep in mind if you’re sensitive to synthetics.
Overall, I would say it’s a pretty good fragrance, although it may not be the most unique or groundbreaking scent I’ve ever smelled. It’s a lazy attempt from Paco Rabanne to produce something that will please the masses and sell units, which it has achieved for the most part. So, it’s a safe choice that will likely appeal to many; still, personally, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Performance
When it comes to performance, Invictus doesn’t disappoint. It projects well for the first 2-3 hours, with an impressive sillage. It then transitions into a skin scent, which remains detectable for most of the day. This is the best I usually get from most EDTs, with a few exceptions.
Compliments
This fragrance is a magnet for compliments. I would say it has been crafted with this specific purpose in mind, so if that is important to you, Invictus could be just what you’re looking for.
Invictus is also renowned in the fragrance community for its ability to make a lasting impression with the ladies. For instance, my wife, a discerning fan, was instantly captivated by its scent the first time she smelled it on me. Her eyes lit up, and she couldn’t resist drawing me in again for another whiff.

If you’d prefer to sample it first, these are my two favourite
and most reliable places to get authentic decants:

When to wear
Technically speaking, it’s an all-rounder, and you can wear it any time of year without getting into too much trouble. However, just because you can doesn’t necessarily mean you should.
Sweeter fragrances like Invictus are generally better suited for autumn and wintertime, as there are better options for the warmer weather. Although it has that marine element, which gives it a refreshing and cool vibe, the sweetness doesn’t blend as well with the heat.
So remember, guys, when considering what to wear in what climate, think to yourself, “No SWEET in the HEAT.”
You can thank me later…
Where to wear
Again, Invictus is an all-rounder, meaning it can be dressed up for formal occasions or dressed down for casual outings without too much of a problem. I’ve been primarily wearing it to the office (where I spend most of my time), and it has generally been well received.

Conclusion
So there you have it, guys. I give it an average rating. It’s not a bad fragrance. However, it would be too generic and predictable for me to reach for my credit card and buy a whole bottle. It will do the job if you’re looking for a one-size-fits-all fragrance that will garner positive attention.
