Greetings, gentleman. After recently reviewing the infamous Armani Code, I decided to dust off another classic from the Giorgio Armani line this week, the original Acqua Di Gio Pour Homme. This one takes me back, guys. It was a personal favourite and staple of mine, leaving me with fond memories. It was released in 1996 and is considered an aromatic aquatic fragrance for men (the clue’s in the name, really). The noses behind this one are Alberto Morillas, Annick Menardo and Christian Dussoulier.

For clarification, I have been wearing the most recent formulation (which has changed), and I’ll talk about that. Like any successful fragrance, there are many flankers, as you would expect, and I’ll briefly cover some of those as well.

It is one of the best-selling fragrances for men of all time. Maybe even the most. Why is that? Well, because it’s good, but how good? That’s what we’re going to find out in today’s article.

Appearance and Presentation

The bottle aesthetic is classic, elegant and refreshing, much like the scent itself. I love everything about it, and it would look great in any man’s collection.

The design has remained the same since its initial release, which is great because it’s okay just as it is. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it, I say. They should’ve left the formulation alone as well, but this is 2026, and I’m afraid that’s to be expected.

Moving swiftly on…

Price and where to buy

This fragrance is still flying off the shelves in most stores today despite being almost 30 years old, which is quite impressive, I must say. It’s stood the test of time.

When it comes to getting the best deal, your best bet is almost always the discounters — especially when they’re running coupon codes. And the one that’s never let me down is FragranceX.

They ship worldwide, they only deal in authentic stock, and they’ve got a solid 30-day return policy, which keeps things risk-free.

Prices do move around (sometimes daily, especially during holiday sales), so it’s always worth checking the current deal. 👇

The Notes

Top Notes – Lime, Lemon, Bergamot, Jasmine, Orange, Mandarin Orange, Neroli

Middle Notes -Sea Notes, Jasmine, Calone, Peach, Rosemary, Freesia, Hyacinth, Cyclamen, Violet, Coriander, Nutmeg, Rose, Mignonette

Base Notes – White Musk, Cedar, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Amber

My thoughts on the scent

Okay, so a lot is happening here, as you can see from the list of notes. It’s a highly recognisable scent, and if you’ve never worn it, you’ve likely encountered someone who has. The top notes are primarily fresh and citrusy, with a salty oceanic accord in the middle. You also have those white florals that bring everything together, along with the woods and musk in the base.

This scent remains very pleasing and likeable throughout its lifecycle. It’s fundamentally a floral, salty, and aquatic fragrance with a sweet tinge. It smells like your skin after a warm, pleasant day swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Very nice, indeed.

Now, Its age does show to some extent when you compare it to some of the other big boys of today, and it may even have a slight “dad vibe” Having said that, this is still a fantastic-smelling fragrance, and I would recommend it to anyone of any age. You simply can’t go wrong with it.

Is it masculine?

Absolutely. It’s one of the most unique masculine freshies you could buy, in my opinion.

Performance?

Acqua Di Gio’s performance has always been subpar (even in the 90s), and the reformulation has only worsened it. The scent is almost the same, but the performance still leaves something to be desired, which is a real shame.

It’s not awful, but you will have to reapply 2 or 3 times throughout the day to make it last. It will project for the first 45 minutes and fade to a skin scent shortly afterwards. After around 3 hours, you will barely be able to smell it at all. There is some room for improvement in this area, I would suggest.

Compliments?

Compliments are pretty much guaranteed with this one. Amongst all the fragrances I have tested over the years (and there have been many), I would place this one in my top five compliment pullers without a shadow of a doubt.

When to wear?

In terms of versatility, this one is ticking all the boxes and can be worn all year round. That doesn’t mean better options don’t exist, particularly for the colder months. As a general rule of thumb, fresh scents like Acqua Di Gio will work best in the spring and summer.

Where to wear?

Again, it’s an all-rounder that will do the job in most scenarios and is particularly well suited for casual day wear. You could dress it up a bit in the evening, though warm, spicy scents are more complimentary to that kind of setting. Overall, it will be well received wherever you go, so there is no need to overthink it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Extremely versatile
  • A classic that has stood the test of time
  • An easily recognisable scent
  • Reasonably priced
  • Refreshing and refined
  • Crowd-pleaser
  • Compliment puller

Cons

  • Overused to some extent
  • A little dated
  • Not ideal for those who dislike sharp aquatic or citrus scents
  • Performance could be improved

Flankers

Here are my thoughts on some of the flankers.

Acqua Di Gio Profumo (2015)

This one is the most hyped-up flanker of them all and happens to be my favourite. It retains the fresh Acqua Di Gio DNA, although the white florals have been replaced with incense, adding a warm, spicy kick. The performance is also much better than the original. It’s worth checking out for sure.

Acqua Di Gio Absolu (2018)

They appear to have departed quite substantially from the original DNA with this one. It has an aquatic essence, though much sweeter and woody than the others. This is my least favourite, as I personally found it a little nauseating. On the other hand, it’s well known for being a good compliment puller, so it must have something about it.

Acqua Di Gio Profondo (2020)

Like Profumo, they’ve retained the original aquatic DNA, but this time, they’ve replaced the florals with some greenery, which I think has been blended exceptionally well. This one is probably my second favourite of all the flankers.

Acqua Di Gio Eau De Parfum (2022)

This mature and sophisticated scent would be worth a look if you’re a little older like me. It has similarities to the original, with more of a green and earthy undertone. The main accords are green mandarin, clary sage, patchouli, and vetiver. If you’re a younger guy, remember it’s not as fresh and less modern than the others in the lineup.

I’ll leave it there for now. There are other “flankers of flankers” that you can buy, including Acqua Di Gio Absolu Instinct and Acqua Di Gio Profundo Lights, which I will perhaps discuss another time.

Conclusion

So there you have it, my humble opinion on this timeless classic, which is still well worth a gander today. If you’re in the market for a freshie like Acqua Di Gio, you might want to consider checking out my recent reviews on Lacoste White, Ferragamo Free Time, or Nautica Voyage—all of which I highly recommend. You can also check out my review of Polo Blue (a fragrance that is often compared to Acqua Di Gio).

Remember to let me know your thoughts and experiences with this one in the comments below. I would love to hear from you.
