Greetings, gentlemen. It’s time for the soap of the week, and today, I am talking about Brut’s Soap on a Rope. I have wanted to do this review for some time, but sadly, these products have vanished from store shelves since I last used them nearly a year ago.

Earlier this week, I was in my local Beauty Base, having a little nosy about as usual when I have a few minutes spare. Suddenly, I heard a voice from the back of the store calling my name, which sounded remarkably like Vinnie Jones. I turned my head to see what was happening, and lo and behold, there it was, my beloved Soap on a Roap. It was like the sun emerging from a dark cloud on a cold, rainy day.

Now, I have a soft spot for Brut. It was the first review I wrote on this blog, and you can read it here. This fragrance started it all for me because the men in my family who introduced me to the practice of wearing cologne all used to wear Brut. Unfortunately, the current formulation of the fragrance is a shadow of its former self, but how about the soap? Is this rare item still worth a purchase today?

Let’s get into it.

Price and where to buy

It appears to be a seasonal product that only appears around Christmastime. It usually comes with a deodorant spray, and you can find them in drug stores such as Boots or Superdrug here in the UK. It’s intended as a nostalgia-inducing stocking filler for your Dad or Grandad, who would most likely have used the original back in the day.

It’s pretty cheap at around £5.00, so if you see it, buy it. You might not have another opportunity for a while.

Presentation

The presentation is what you would typically expect from a Brut product with the original colours and logo. The box in the photo is contained within a larger box along with the deodorant spray. My two toddler sons managed to get hold of the larger box yesterday and have demolished it, so I don’t have a photo for you, I’m afraid. Bless them.

It doesn’t look like you can buy the soap by itself; it only comes as part of a combo. I have never seen it, anyway.

Why is it on a roap?

It has been reported that the original idea of putting a bar of soap on a rope came from the English Leather Company in the 1940s. The purpose of it was so you could hang it up neatly in your bathroom without leaving it on the side of your bath to turn into mush.

The other purpose was to wrap the rope around your wrist to stop you from dropping it on the floor. This could prevent you from slipping over as you pick it up and potentially doing yourself a mischief.

Ingredients

Here is a photo of the box I took this morning that will explain everything.

Are the ingredients organic?

I wouldn’t have thought so. They don’t sound all that organic to me.

🔥NEW FRAGRANCE!

OLD SCHOOL — Eau de Toilette

Classic masculinity. Zero nonsense.
A clean, barbershop-inspired fragrance from the days when men walked out of the bathroom smelling like aftershave — not “Ocean Breeze Watermelon Mist.”

Built to showcase Vetiver at its best, Old School opens with bright blended citrus, moves into subtle spice, and settles into a warm mix of woods and earthy confidence.

A sharp, masculine, timeless scent that never goes out of style.

Price: £45

What does it smell like?

The Brut original fragrance was arguably one of the most successful men’s products of the 70s and 80s. Today, it’s become a novelty item and even a bit of a joke to some extent. This is probably why little effort has gone into the current formulation, which is a real shame. Luckily, the soap, on the other hand, is still pretty good.

If you’ve ever put your nose to the Brut original scent, you will know it has a citrusy lavender vibe with a musky base. This is essentially the soap version of that fragrance, which smells fantastic.

The scent isn’t identical, but close enough for you to identify it as “The great smell of Brut.” It makes me smell clean and fresh, and the wife loves it when I jump into bed after my evening shower. The more I think about it, I should buy a couple of these while I still can.

Performance?

This is a powerful-smelling soap and performs very well in the shower. The scent of it will linger on your skin and in your bathroom long after you’re done with it. It lathers beautifully and has just the right amount of grit for added exfoliation. What more could you want?

Conclusion

There you have it, guys; I am delighted with this and have enjoyed using it over the last week. I hope some of you come across it and have the opportunity to try it. If you do, please let me know your opinions in the comment section below.
