Today I will review a gem called the Clubman Pinaud Aftershave Lotion. The origins of this brand date back to sometime in the early 19th century, so to say it has stood the test of time would be an understatement.

A men’s grooming company that is approximately 200 years old and still going strong today is very impressive and worth checking to see what the fuss is all about. So with that being said, let’s check to see what the fuss is all about.

Appearance

To start with, I do like the overall presentation of this. It has a unique aristocratic look and feel, even though it is just a plastic bottle with a sticker on the front. It looks like something that you would typically find in a 1920s barbershop, and you probably would have, as this is what they were known for.

The man on the front with the top hat and cane gives me the impression that it was intended for the more traditional upper-class gentleman that wanted to look and smell his best.

Where to buy

From what I can gather, the company (which has French origins) is not that popular here in the UK, which is a real shame. I haven’t seen it being sold in any brick-and-mortar shops, nor in any of the barbers that I have come across. As far as I can tell, it’s more widely available in the US, so if you don’t live there, you’ll probably have to go online with this one.

This fragrance was a £15 blind buy from Amazon, purely based on its reputation and the fact that I love fougère Barbershop fragrances. Perhaps in other countries, you may be able to pick it up a little cheaper; lucky you, aye?

The scent

Let’s talk about the smell. As I said, this is a classic BARBERSHOP fragrance, so you know what to expect if you are familiar with this genre. You will be struck with fresh, spicy and citrusy accords in the opening, which will then dry down to more of a talc or baby powder-type scent. This characteristic is typical of barbershop fragrances and can be found in many others; look at my Brut Original Aftershave Review, for example.

Although similar in many ways, Brut, for me, is sadly a shadow of its former self, and I wish a bit more effort went into the formulation, at least for the aftershave version. If you ever find yourself trying to decide between the two, I would say the Clubman wins hands down.

I believe in keeping things simple, which extends to my fragrance collection to some extent. You don’t need to spend £100 on an overpriced (and over-complicated) fragrance to smell good, and this fragrance is proof of that.

Is it manly?

But is it manly, I hear you ask? Absolutely, I know I said it smells a bit like talc, but stick with me on this one, give it a try, and hopefully, you’ll know what I mean. It will smell like your dad rocking his Sunday best as he treats the family to Sunday lunch.

It is, in my opinion, a natural ‘family man’ scent that may be suited to a chap in his late 30s or 40s plus. Having said that, If you’re a younger guy that doesn’t necessarily follow the crowd, then there’s no reason why you couldn’t pull this off either; it’s all a matter of personal preference at the end of the day.

Performance

So what about the performance? Well, the opening is powerful and will dominate the room for the first hour, which is a good thing as it is very easy on the nose. Unfortunately, it will quickly become a skin scent, which is my only complaint. In my experience, splash-on fragrances don’t tend to perform that well, so this wasn’t much of a surprise. You will probably want to re-apply throughout the day if you need to freshen up, and you can afford to at £15 for 180ml of juice.

Where and when to wear it

One thing I do like about this fragrance is that it’s an all-rounder. It can be worn anytime of the year and for any occasion without becoming irritating. If you’re looking for a convenient everyday scent that will work for any scenario, then this could be ideal.

Having a scroll through the company website, it would seem that they have a vast array of different variations of this, including citrus musk, vanilla, lime and rum. None of which I have tried myself, but based on what I have experienced so far, I am very eager to do so.

Conclusion

As far as quality and value for money are concerned, this was a solid buy, and I would recommend it. If you prefer your modern fragrances, or perhaps something a bit more on the warm and heavy side, then this may not be what you’re looking for.

If you are looking for something fresh and crisp (like our friend in the suit on the front of the bottle), then you will want to check this one out. If you have tried this or any of the other versions, do let me know what you think, as I am interested to hear your thoughts.

On a side note, if you are like me and love barbershop fougères, you will want to keep a close eye on this blog. I am making it my mission to find the best ones out there, something that is becoming increasingly difficult in the modern world of today. I will be publishing all of my findings here, so stay tuned.

I hope this review has been helpful to you, and do stay tuned for more of my thoughts on the best and worst men’s products of all time.
