Ralph Lauren Polo Green, or just Ralph Lauren Polo, was one of my first masculine fragrance from back in the day and a sure staple in my collection. Polo Green Eau de Toilette is a masculine fragrance launched in 1978 by Carlos Beniam, who is still actively involved in perfume-making today. It’s also a very unique scent and you’re unlikely to find many other men wearing it (particularly if they are under 40).

This is a classic and distinctive gentleman’s fragrance from the iconic fashion house Ralph Lauren (one of my favourite brands) with much to offer. I will discuss the standard Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de toilette version, as seen above in the photo.

Ralph Lauren recently launched ‘Polo Cologne Intense’, which resembles this one. I am unsure how closely the two are related (if at all), but that’s a review for another day.

Appearance

The Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de Toilette bottle is a beauty, as you can see. Straight out of the box, it looks and feels high quality, and the colours are just beautiful. Deep emerald green with a gold cap reminds me of something that wouldn’t look out of place in the trophy cabinet at the golf club.

Where to buy

Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de toilette could probably be found in stock at your local perfume store and shouldn’t be too much of a problem, although you may have to rummage around a bit for it as it’s by no means the most popular of the Polo series. If you do some online searching, you may even be lucky enough to find a Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de toilette vintage bottle, although to date I haven’t smelled any of them, which is a shame.

Mine was a gift from my wife that I got a couple of years ago, and I have worn it well. I should also mention that the price of this stuff isn’t exactly what I would call cheap. The average price of Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de toilette is around £40-60 depending on what size you go for, but well worth the money, in my opinion.

Sizes

There appear to be two different-sized bottles you can currently buy which are the smaller 59ml version (my favourite version of the bottle) and the big boy 118ml version. If you haven’t tried this before I would suggest the smaller version first and see how you get on with that. It’s also much easier to carry around and keep in your bag.

The notes

Top notes – juniper berries, basil, artemisia, caraway, coriander and bergamot.

Middle notes – pine tree needles, leather, chamomile, pepper, carnation, geranium, jasmine and rose.

Base notes – tobacco leaf absolute, oakmoss, patchouli, cedar, vetiver, musk and amber.

Initial thoughts

As you can see, the Polo Green aftershave Eau de Toilette has plenty of powerful green notes. In my initial impression, the notes I can smell are mainly pine, leather, tobacco leaf, and wood with a hint of rose. The bergamot top notes are also pleasant and refreshing. There is a clear distinction as to what this fragrance is all about and it smells masculine right through to its core.

Manliness

It is an aromatic and distinctive scent that a refined gentleman of the thoroughbred sporting tradition may have worn. Or more of a sophisticated chap that spends much time reading books in the library.

Referred to by some as “the smell of success”, which can be somewhat pretentious, but I think you get the idea. Does success have a scent? hmm, I guess that’s a topic for another article.

Putting that aside, the oak moss accord has a fresh, natural, earthy intensity, as if you are taking a pleasant walk in the great outdoors. Furthermore, I love the aromatic smell of pine, it’s such a great scent. Overall, the notes blend perfectly and the scent is something quite special with an addictive heart.

Performance

Ralph Lauren Polo Green Eau de toilette is powerful. Two or three sprays of this fragrance will last all day, possibly even beyond. Anything more than that will start to become far too overpowering.

Application

I would keep in mind that this distinctive aftershave may not be to everyone’s liking, and the sheer potency of the scent might be enough to annoy those around you, so go easy on the spray.

Where to wear it

Due to its high potency, it may not be an everyday scent you could wear around the office (although I have done it anyway). It would be more suitable for occasional use in an ambient setting, such as a night out at the theatre or a dinner date.

When to wear it

In my opinion, you would also probably want to spray some of this in colder climates to get the most out of it. I would avoid it in the summer and opt for something that smells a bit lighter.

These are only my suggestions, and you can wear this wherever you like but remember, the force is strong with this one! If you were expecting this to be a subtle perfume, I can tell you that it isn’t.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a natural masculine fragrance with a rich heritage. It will surely put the hair back on your chest and is one of the best perfumes of the 1970s, in my opinion.
